Cooperatives are posed as a mechanism to advance the social and economic well being of marginalized communities. Response to such a mechanism is mixed, as some view it as an opportunity for advancement, creation of a new social order, and elimination of economic exploitation. In the past it has been used as a tool to assimilate one culture into another.
